Creating Your Personal Oasis

Hello you, and welcome to inside the mind of an Obsessive Compulsive Designer.

My favorite room in a home is the bedroom because it is the place where you start your day and also where you end it. It sets the tone for the day and helps you wind down at the end of the day. It should be your personal oasis that your mind can feel relaxed and peaceful. I have never been in more love with my bedroom than I am now. There are several ways I like transform my bedroom into a sanctuary.

  1. Pillows, pillows, pillows. Yes, they make the process of making your bed 20x longer every day but they are SO worth the hassle. Adding plenty of accent pillows to your bed can add your personal style in a comfy pleasing way. I love adding pillows with different textures and subtle patterns rather than overloading on color and being too overstimulating.
  2. Window treatments are another great touch to add to your bedroom. Not only for the purpose that they serve to help block outsider’s gaze into your home, but also to add dimension, texture, color, really anything you want. Now that I’ve been thrown into the adult world and my body is accustomed to a 8-5, I have chosen a sheer white curtain to let light in around the time I wake up everyday. I love the softness they add to the otherwise harsh blinds. Also, going for sheer ties into another one of my key points: light.
  3. Lighting is so very important in every room of your home. In the bedroom, I love using my sheer curtain to let in light 24/7. Getting the sunlight in my room in the morning really helps get me out of bed and natural light creates the perfect ambiance. However, after the sun sets and I have to switch to using artificial light, I like to keep a dimmer warmer toned bulb in my lamps. Anything too bright or an LED with a high lumen count isn’t as easy on tired eyes.
  4. Florals are a great way to add life into a home and add a pop of color. As more of a minimalist with color, I selected a faux succulent. (Yes I said faux, I would kill any living plant. Sometimes I wonder how I keep myself alive!) Succulents are a huge trend right now and they offer the option to have a floral without too much color.
  5. Candles are a secret addiction of mine. The one you see in my bedroom, I found at Home Goods. The smell is to DIE for. However, I’m too much of a perfectionist to light it and damage the wick. Even without lighting it, it gives off such a strong smell that I often mistake it for lit. Another option is to add a Scentsy. (I keep one in my kitchen to eliminate nasty food smells.) Smell is a great way to help us ease our minds and get relaxed at the end of the day, which is why I always have a candle next to my bedside.
  6. Texture is my go-to in the bedroom to avoid overstimulating color. I love the mixture of linens, furs, and wood. No one can deny a big fuzzy blanket! Same as no one can deny that freshly washed sheets are always the comfiest. Touch is one powerful sense and one of the most important when diving into your bed after a long day. So, keep your sense of touch on its toes and switch up materials and textures in the bedroom.
