At Home Spa Day

Self care, self quarantine – am I right? While we won’t have a real spa day anytime soon, we might as well through one of our own in the mean time! Here are some great things to make sure you do during your upcoming self care spa day.
Hair Masks
Because what says, “It’s a self care spa day” quite like a hair mask? I’ve been using Lush’s Retread for years and absolutely love it. I’ll use this hair mask every other or every time before I wash my hair. On spa day occasions, I break out the big guns with the coconut oil. A nice oil concoction while relaxing through the rest of the spa day activities is a MUST.
Acupuncture Mat
A fun, relaxing torture device. Acupuncture has many benefits, I’ll let you Google that on your own, so I love incorporating this into a spa day. H*ll I incorporate it into every day. Fifteen to twenty minutes laying on this mat, focusing on breathing, listening to calming music (or nothing) is the definition of at home spa.
Tea Bank
It’s not a successful spa day without some great drinks. Oddly enough, one of my favorite parts of a spa day is relaxing with a hot glass of tea before my treatment even begins. I’m a tea-fanatic so welcome to my personal stash. I have a wide spectrum of teas and others in my organizer and some loose leaf teas in the back. My favorite teas for a spa day are the Chamomile with Lemon and the Dandelion Root.
Nail Strengthener
For me, my nails aren’t a priority. I don’t want to pay for someone to do them and I don’t really want to keep up on a nail polish that just chips everyday. That’s why I focus on growing healthy long nails with this polish. You apply every other day and it helps to strengthen my nails to the point where they are beautiful au natural.
Rolling
I’m a rolling fiend and a don’t discriminate when it comes to my rollers. I bought this jade roller / gua sha about a year ago and I absolutely love them! They are nice for a spa day or even just day to day. It’s definitely a self care day when I break out my ice roller, a gift from my mother (thanks mom!). It’s so cooling and great for de-puffing, aka hangover cure (again, thanks mom).
What are you doing during your spa days at home? Leave me some ideas below in the comments!

Everyday Eye Makeup Tutorial

IMG_9171.JPG

Hello you, and welcome to inside the mind of an Obsessive Compulsive Designer

I’ll be the first to admit that in the mornings, I can hardly be bothered to do my makeup (or really anything for that matter). I’ve started picking out my outfits the night before because I know if I let myself do it in the morning, it won’t be pretty. However, I’ve been doing essentially the same makeup for the past few years and have committed it to muscle memory (Go me!). Today, I wanted to share it with you because it is honestly the easiest tutorial EVER. I’m not a professional makeup artist by any means; but, I do know when in doubt – blend. 😉 For this look I’m going to use my trusty Too Faced Natural Eyes Eye Shadow palette. Having this palette isn’t a necessity to recreate this look, you can use any natural colors that you already have! If you are interested in this palette, feel free to check out my post about it and see some of the swatches for yourself!

Step 1 : Prime

Whether you work full time, you’re going to school, or whatever you do with your life – ALWAYS prime your eyelids. You’ll get the best color payoff and you won’t have to worry about your eyeshadow creasing. But what do you do when it’s 6 am and you can’t be bothered to prime? Do like me! I just take whatever concealer is left on my beauty blender and use that on my eyelids and this does the trick!

Step 2 : Setting Powder

I like to use my RCMA powder to set my eyelids because I’m already using it to bake my under eye concealer. Don’t overcomplicate your life in the morning, just use whatever you have handy. If you’re looking for a setting shade in this palette, I like using Heaven.

Step 3 : Transition Shade

The first real step to the eyeshadow look is to find the perfect crease shade. I find that the color Nudie is the perfect crease shade. It’s not too far off from my skin color and it has a hint of gray to it. (A shade with a grayer tint to it will help you create the look of natural shadow.) I buff this all over my crease and blend it upwards. There isn’t really a rhyme or reason to how much I apply, just until I like the color.

Step 4 : Outer Corner

I like to pick a deeper color for my outer corner to give the look some depth. Cashmere Bunny has really proven to be a gorgeous shade for that! I definitely don’t over-do this since it is just an everyday look. After you get off work, you can pop a darker shade there to really smoke out the look and take it to a night-time look, like Sexpresso.

Step 5 : POP!

I like to add a little shimmer to my everyday look so it isn’t too plain and simple. (Because let’s face it, I’m not a plain and simple kind of girl!) I’ll use a flatter brush to pack on Push-Up to the inner two thirds of my eyelid. Afterwards I’ll take a blending brush and blend the darker shade and shimmer together for a seamless transition.

Step 6 : Inner Corner Highlight

Taking Silk Teddy on a small definer brush to the inner corner adds the necessary last touch to the look!

Step 7 : Volume

Most of the time, I like taking a small packing brush and coat the area where my eyelashes and eyelids meet with Sexpresso. It’s a much softer look than eyeliner and adds a bit of volume to your lashes to make them appear fuller. Completely unnecessary step, but I LOVE the way it looks.

Now, you’re ready to rock the day (and look put together while doing so)! Check out my Must Have Makeup Brushes post to see an up close look at the brushes I used to create this look. You definitely don’t have to have the Too Faced Natural Eye Neutral Eye Shadow Palette to do this look. This concept works with any eye shadows in similar colors! With these few easy steps, you will have a flawless look that will take no time at all. Just remember to blend, blend, blend! 🙂

Must-Have Makeup Brushes

1

Hello you, and welcome to inside the mind of an Obsessive Compulsive Designer

Let’s talk about the essentials when it comes to makeup brushes. I don’t pretend to be any kind of makeup artist or “guru” and I don’t very much care about name brands. So, I can’t honestly tell you the brand of most of my makeup brushes. All I know is that they came from online boutiques, drugstores, or from Sephora. However, I know which type of makeup brushes you should have in your personal arsenal. Let’s get into it!

2

Flat Top Kabuki Brush – Great for blending out foundation if you prefer brushes to sponges. (I prefer sponge for a more flawless airbrushed finish.) This brush is also great for blending together your contour, blush, and highlight to give you a natural finish.

3

Face Powder Brush – I always set my foundation with a large soft face powder brush. I think it’s a great addition to the arsenal!

4

Contour Brush – I have a couple brushes for this. The first is an angled brush that does wonders. However, my favorite of the two is my Nars ita brush. (It’s a $50 brush. It’s excessive, I know. The shape is all you really need.) It’s great for carving out the cheekbones.

5

Blush Brush – This smaller dome shaped blush brush is great for applying blush!

6

Eye Blending Brush – I can’t tell you how many of these I actually have. I’m often lazy and when I don’t want to wash brushes to switch colors, I take a new blending brush. I can’t do my eyeshadow without one of these brushes

7

Flat Eyeshadow Brush – These are great for packing on pigment. I use these primarily for packing on shimmers to my lids.

I clearly have an excessive amount of brushes but I use the majority of them. This post is just designed to show you what brushes you need to purchase first, or just what a normal everyday person needs (haha!). I hope you enjoyed. I’ll see you Wednesday with another wedding post that I’ve been dying to share!

Lush Products Review

008.JPG

Hello you, and welcome to inside the mind of an Obsessive Compulsive Designer

I wanted to pop in and update you on how my Lush products were going since I hauled those a month or two ago. This post is going to be split down the middle, sadly, because one of the products I’m in love with and the other is…just not for me. It’s a real bummer too because both of these products were so hyped up by everyone who owns them. So, let’s jump into it!

009.JPG

Retread

This conditioner, for those who don’t know, I have been using as an intensive hair mask before washing my hair. I use it just about every time I wash my hair and it took no time for people to notice! It is fantastic and makes my hair so smooth and silky. It diminishes the damaging look that my hair truly has (I’m waiting until after the wedding to chop it off). I love this product and have nothing bad to say about it. I got the larger tub and have been using it for a couple months and I’ve barely made a dent. This is also coming from a girl with extremely long and thick hair. Love it!

Mask of Magnaminty

I know, I know! Occult favorite! I tried so hard to like this product. I used it once weekly, three times weekly, before showers, after showers. Nothing worked. Every time I used this product, it would break me out. And I’m not talking about a spot here or there; but, multiple of those pesky small whiteheads. Enough of them to deter me away from using the product. I’m not sure what everyone else sees in this product but my face is not on board with it. I’ve tried my hardest to make it work but I’m just going to have to give it to a friend or family member. There’s no way I can finish the rest of it!

Let me know your thoughts! Did I just get a bad batch? Is the self-preserving version not as good as the original? I’m curious about your thoughts on these products!

Shopping Haul – Target, Ulta, Michael’s

1.JPG

Hello you, and welcome to inside the mind of an Obsessive Compulsive Designer

I definitely satisfied my shopping itch this weekend. My wallet isn’t happy, but I am! Like most people, Target always gets the best of me. This haul is definitely an odd mixture of all things décor, clothing, and beauty so let’s just get into it!

Firstly, this shirt…omg it is made of the comfiest material ever. I purchased it this weekend and I’ve already worn it. It’s super cute and super comfortable. This shirt will definitely be one of the most used in my collection and who can argue with that price? Am I right? Target you don’t disappoint.

Cat owners will understand this next purchase. I’ve been needing a jewelry tray to put my ring and earrings in at night. Whenever I put them loosely on my night stand, I’ll wake up to find that my cat took them and hid them…This tray is super cute and I loved the metal mixed with glass.

I was in desperate need of a mascara so I decided to try out a Wet N Wild mascara to add to my cruelty free products. So far, I’m not disappointed! I can’t tell if that is because this mascara actually rocks or if my old mascara was soooo beyond done that anything looks better. I’ll keep you updated.

I picked up two more bottles of the Batiste Dark & Deep Brown dry shampoo because I go through these things like nobody’s business! I like the brunette version much better than the original due to the fact that I don’t have to worry about brushing out the white cast.

I’ve wanted to try out these blushes ever since I saw Casey Holmes rave about them. So I picked up Wet N Wild’s Color Icon Ombre Blush in Mai Tai Buy You A Drink. I’m excited to try this out! I bought it at Target but can only seem to find the purple blush on their website? So I linked the actual color from Wet N Wild.

I couldn’t resist picking up another darker nude liquid lipstick and I’ve been meaning to try the new NYX Lip Lingerie line (mine is in the color Push Up). Dark nudes are definitely my go to year round.

I’m always looking to get my hands on a backup eyebrow pencil. So naturally, I had to pick up some more of my ash brown!

I’ve been looking for a good set of cute letters to display. I’m not quite sure where they’re going to be displayed yet but I love the color and material of these. I just had to have them!

My Go-To Autumn Lip Shades

003.JPG

Hello you, and welcome to inside the mind of an Obsessive Compulsive Designer

This nasty humid heat doesn’t have me feeling much of that beautiful fall weather I was promised. However, that doesn’t stop my style from switching seasons before the weather. I’ve officially declared it fall to my wardrobe. I’ve got an itch for a fall shopping spree (let me know if you would like to see a fashion haul). My clothes may need some freshening up for fall but I have my fall lip colors sitting out ready to use. These are some of my staple colors and I don’t stray too far from these darker nudes throughout the year. They are definitely more fall tones though, so I thought I would share.

  1. Tarte’s Tartist Creamy Matte Lip Paint in Namaste
  2. Maybelline Color Sensational in 940 Touchable Taupe
  3. NYX Soft Matte Lip Crème in Copenhagen
  4. Maybelline Color Sensational in 695 Divine Wine
  5. NYX Soft Matte Lip Crème in Athens

I swatched them all together in order below so you can see them in relation to each other since a couple of them are quite similar nudes. What are your favorite go-to fall shades? I’d love to try out some new shades!

New Hair Care Products

003

Hello you, and welcome to inside the mind of an Obsessive Compulsive Designer

Today I wanted to talk to you about a couple new products I picked up recently to try out. My shampoo and conditioner are getting low; so, while I was out buying backups, I decided to try out these two beauties. I’m super excited to dive into these. I’ve heard nothing but good things about OGX so I’m sure I won’t be disappointed. My hair is in a desperate need of a trim so any extra life I can put back into my hair, the better. While in the OGX section of the store, I decided to try out the Coconut Milk Shampoo and the Argan Oil of Morocco Conditioner. I didn’t want to commit fully to one or the other (coconut milk vs argan oil) so I decided to go with one of each. The main reasons I finally gravitated towards these are due to the fact they’re sulfate free and cruelty free. YAY! More cruelty free products to add to my arsenal! I’m itching to give these two a go and once I do, I’ll be sure to let you know my thoughts.

Have any of you used these products or any products by OGX? Have you enjoyed them? Let me know below.

This or That Tag

001.JPG

Hello you, and welcome to inside the mind of an Obsessive Compulsive Designer

I saw laurenellen do this tag and thought it was super cute and creative. So, today I decided to give it a go! If there is a rhyme or reason to why the originating author chose the subjects they did, I’ll never know. I thought it was fun and a few of the choices definitely threw me for a loop! Keep reading to read some of my favorites!

Makeup

Blush or Bronzer : Bronzer, I need it!

Lip Gloss or Lipstick : Stick. My hair sticks to gloss WAY too easily. Annoying!

Eyeliner or Mascara : Mascara. I definitely use mascara way more than eyeliner. I feel bare without it.

Pressed or Loose Eyeshadows : Pressed, I guess. I didn’t know loose was a thing?

Brushes or Sponges : Depends on what it’s for I guess…I use brushes more than sponges so brushes I suppose!

Nails

Long or Short : Long! If only I could grow them out without picking at them…

Acrylic or Natural : Natural. I love acrylic for their length but they’re so much work to keep up on.

Brights or Darks : Option C – Neutral.

Flower or No Flower : NOOOOO Flower

Fashion

Jeans or Sweat Pants : Sweat Pants all day, everyday!

Long Sleeve or Short Sleeve : Long sleeve for sure.

Stripes or Plaid : Plaid. Not all stripes are flattering…

Dresses or Skirts : Skirts. More versatility.

Flip Flops or Sandals : Sandals.

Scarves or Hats : Scarves for days I’m dressing cute. Hats on days I want to be a bum.

Studs or Dangly Earrings : Studs.

Heels or Flats : Flats. As much as it pains me to say, flats are more functional for me. Heels are so cute though.

Jacket or Hoodie : Hoodie. If I’m dressing down, I’m going full bum mode!

Hair

Curly or Straight : Straight. Takes way less time to do!

Bobby Pins or Butterfly Clips : Bobby Pins. Not sure if I have ever used a butterfly clip.

Long or Short : Long. I’ve done both but I prefer long.

Light or Dark : Dark. Looks best with my skin tone. I’m not meant to be a blonde!

Side Sweep Bangs or Full Bangs : Side Sweep. I’ve never done full bangs (not after grade school at least).

Up or Down : Up. Get all this dang hair out of my face!

Well, that’s it! I hope you enjoyed reading this tag as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you do this tag, be sure to tag me!

My Evening Skincare Routine

008

Hello you, and welcome to inside the mind of an Obsessive Compulsive Designer.

Makeup is fun and all, but no one can disagree with how amazing it feels to take it off at the end of the day! Over the years I’ve tried a lot of different products out on my skin to try and find the best combination for me; and, after 23 years, I think I’ve got it!

My Skin Type: I tend to be more normal but get oily in my t-zone areas. I’ve struggled with acne as much as the next person, not too bad but not crystal clear skin either. Most of my acne is hormonal but I’ll get the occasional pimple in areas I subconsciously touch throughout the day (Ex: chin and temples).

My Routine:

  1. My nightly routine always starts with a makeup remover. The one I’ve been using for the past couple years is the Mario Badescu Cucumber Cleansing Lotion on a cotton pad. Despite what the name says, it is not lotion. It does a great job breaking down my makeup and leaving my skin feeling fresh. Using one pad for my face and a separate one for my eyes seem to work best for me and keeps junk from clogging my pores.
  2. After I have removed my makeup sufficiently, I go in with my cleanser. Currently, I have been trying out the Clean and Clear Advantage Acne Control and am really enjoying it! It definitely isn’t as natural of a formula as my makeup remover but it doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. I ALWAYS dry my face off with a fresh towel to prevent the buildup of bacteria and undoing all the cleansing I just did.
  3. Aloe Vera is a secret of mine that really helps my sensitive skin. The aloe calms down any irritation and helps with reducing redness. Definitely a good idea to add to your regimen.
  4. Next, I like to go in with my moisturizer. I make sure to apply a decent amount so my skin can continue soaking it in all night. Be sure to bring down the moisturizer onto your neck (it’s one of the first places to show your age!).
  5. Eye cream has definitely helped out my bags and help me eliminate the need for color correcting during my makeup routine. I added this about a year ago to help prevent wrinkles and eye bags. So far, it has done a great job! (Looking for a great cruelty free eye cream to move onto after this one.)
  6. I tend to sway more towards using Vaseline as my lip treatment at night. It definitely helps keep my lips moisturized enough to handle liquid lipsticks every day. Vaseline works much better than a simple chapstick does but it’s often too thick to wear during the day.
  7. For pimple spot treatment, I always go back to my Mario Badescu Drying Lotion. I’ve used this product for years now and it does a wonderful job drying out my acne. Be sure to ONLY apply it directly to the pimple because it is very drying. I cannot say enough good things about this product!

It may seem a little excessive but I swear by each and every step. I’m the epitome of a lazy girl but I can’t find any corners to cut when it comes to my skincare routine. If I skip a step, I can tell the next morning. Good news is, after some time, it becomes habit and now I can get through all these steps in less than 5 minutes! Makeup is fun but products and trends come and go. Be good to your skin, you have it forever!

New Find at Sephora – Too Faced Natural Eye Neutral Eye Shadow Collection

Hello you, and welcome to inside the mind of an Obsessive Compulsive Designer.

It was about time I upgraded my eyeshadow collection! I’ve been eyeing (pun intended) this little beauty for quite some time now and as my old eye shadow palette was getting low, I decided it was time to upgrade to a cruelty free brand. I don’t do too many crazy looks with my makeup. I really just needed a palette I could create a multitude of natural looks with. I definitely found that in this palette! I’m super excited to start playing around with all the colors and I’ll be sure to let you all know my thoughts. You can guess that this will be on my eyes nonstop for the next few weeks. All of the colors are gorgeous and all swatched beautifully except Sexpresso (sad day). Hopefully it does better on the eyelids. Either way, I’m super excited to see all the looks I can come up with! Let me know in the comments if you would like to see a makeup look with this. I’d love to try that out for you and see how creative I can get!
